Awujale welcoming GEJ to his palace |
Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the respected Awujale of
Ijebuland, has refused to give his endorsement to the second term bid of
President Goodluck Jonathan, who paid a visit to the Awujale Palace, Ijebu Ode
to solicit for his blessing.
While addressing the visiting president, who has in the
last three weeks turned the South West region into his 'temporary base',
Awujale said to the president that no Oba in the Yorubaland can direct his
subjects to vote any candidate because of the sophistication.
“In Ijebu here, it is not possible for any Oba, not even
in Ijebu, in Yorubaland, to go out and say vote for this, vote for that, that
person is looking for trouble. But give them the opportunity to present their
programme so that people can make up their minds on what to do. I think this is
a very sound democratic principle and that is what I have decided to do, to
give you the opportunity of meeting with the people," said
Oba Adetona.
The respected monarch added that there is no 'Sultan of Yorubaland' who will commandeer the Yoruba votes. He later shown the President a 1937 framed picture of five leading Obas in Yorubaland to butress his point.
President Jonathan had arrived Awujale palace at 11:15 am in company of Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu, the national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party; Seriake Dickson, Bayelsa State governor; Dr. Segun Mimiko, Ondo State governor; and Otunba Gbenga Daniel, former Ogun State governor.
Others at the meeting include Musiliu Obanikoro, controversial minister-designate; Buruji Kashamu, Chairman, Mobilisation and Organisation Committee of the PDP in the South West; Gboyega Isiaka, PDP Governorship candidate in the Staten other PDP leaders as well as some members of the All Progressives Congress and Social Democratic Party.
