The Lagos State Government says there is no going back on the completion of the ongoing construction of 114 inner city roads across the state in six months. The road construction is valued at N17.5 billion.
The government also expressed satisfaction with the progress of works on the road so far, saying that the contractors had assured that they would meet the deadline for the completion, which is June, 2016. The construction of the roads began in January.
At a news conference on Tuesday in Alausa, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria, Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami, said the contractors had been paid 30 percent as the mobilization fees which enabled them to go to site to begin the construction in January.
He said two roads would be constructed in each of the 20 Local Governments, LGs and 37 Local Council Development Areas, LCDAs, across the state.
Folami stated that the governor had pledged to ensure that 114 roads were delivered in all councils in the first year of his administration in line with his electoral promises as he saw that many roads in the various councils were in deplorable state.
“On his assumption of office, the governor directed the Executive Secretaries to submit names of two inner roads each in their councils. He further directed the Executive Secretaries to award the contract for the construction to eligible companies and should follow due process,” he said.
The commissioner said the construction of the roads began simultaneously in all the 57 councils as the contractors were duly mobilized to site, adding that he had been monitoring the progress of the construction and that government was satisfied with the progress of work so far.
According to Folami, he had visited ongoing road construction in some LGs and LCDAs, which included: Ikeja, Ojodu, Agege, Onigbongbo, Orile-Agege, Ayobo-Ipaja, Egbe-Idimu, Agbado Oke-Odo, Alimosho, Ojokoro, Surulere, Coker-Aguda, Itire-Ikate and Mushin and was satisfied with the progress of work.
The commissioner added that construction of roads in other LGs and LCDAs would be monitored and that government would duly pay the contractors their dues on or before completion of the projects.
The site engineer handling the Agodo Road, Egbe-Idimu LCDA, Engr. Adebola Adenuga assured that the project would be completed within the stipulated period as the construction work was in top gear.
