Grace Jones once famously declared, “I’ll never write my memoirs.”
We are so glad the diva lives by her own rules, and decided to change her mind, because this week, the 67-year-old Jamaican released a highly anticipated autobiography detailing her loves, music, art, film, nightclub days, and, of course, her unique sense of fashion.
Throughout the beauty’s 40-year career, her androgynous look easily translated from 1970s supermodel to 1980s dance queen to her current status of embracing ethnic, tribal ensembles and jaw dropping headpieces. Her signature flattop, exaggerated eyes and dazzling smile changed the way we handled and embraced all shades of Black women.
So in honor of the tastemaker’s latest endeavor, we’ve broken down the elements that have attributed to her star power. From her eyes and skin to her lips and hair, the icon’s unforgettable style deserves a round of applause.
Eyes:
Goth yet vampy, Grace Jones’ eyes are the window into her fiery Gemini soul. A vivid, pigmented matte eye shadow of rich golds, royal purples and fiery reds are often seen across the top of the lid. A sharp black pencil ensures a severe eyebrow. And for extra drama? Add a line of fierce eyeliner to create a strong, feline effect.
Skin:
Let’s face it: no one will ever serve face like Grace! Overall, Mother’s skin is flawless, dewy, smooth and the color of ebony. Blessed with strong, Caribbean bone structure that women (and men) pay millions to obtain and still fail to achieve, she is absolutely beautiful. She has paved the way for a number of dark skinned beauties, such as Naomi Campbell, Alex Wek and Lupita Nyong’o, to slay the catwalks, theaters and magazine covers of today.
Lips:
Full lips require special attention, and Grace knows how to work her famous pout. Sticking with complimentary tones, the legend gives vamp realness in an assortment of hues, including reds, berry, mauves, plums and burgundies, that accentuate what she already brings to the table.
Hair:
Over the course of her career, Grace has donned soft coils, short wigs and even pixie cuts. But it’s her infamous high-top fade that inspired a legion including Andre Leon Talley and dare we say hip-hop! Buzzed on both sides and high and geometric atop, we saw the supermodel rock her bold ’dos as she appeared on screen in Conan the Destroyer (1984) and the James Bond film 'A View to a Kill' (1985).
These days, the icon sports a beautiful baldie, but she will always remain #TeamNaturalMVP.
