JONATHAN VISITS KIDS IN UK, RELOCATES FAMILY

President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is not winning the war against Boko Haram. An indication of his fears were confirmed with his recent visit to his kids earlier relocated from the British International School, Lekki, Lagos to London last month. Close aides of the President announced he was going to the United Kingdom without details on his mission last week. Close sources hinted his recent visit to the United Kingdom was to see his children who he might not see in the next few months of the electioneering campaign. On his visits were some of his close relations to ensure a family re-union. Prior to the relocation of the children from the British School, his aides had bought a beiffting house in upscale London to accommodate the family and their aides, following threats and hints that Boko Haram were on their trails. Observers believed the move by the President preclude the notion that Nigeria is safe and confirms the fears in some quarters that a whollistic approach is being applied to tame insurgency. Where lies our hope and confidence that Nigeria is winning the war against Boko Haram, here. Why should a Nigerian soldier put his life on the line when the President has relocated his own immediate family? Who wants to be a sacrificial lamb? These and more probing questions are on the lips of Nigerians who expressed dismay at the development. As at today, there is no statement credited to the Presidency or his aides on his mission to the United Kingdom.

PDP’s GMB’s ‘Semi-Illiterate’ Faux Paus: US Don Bombs Prof. Wale Oladapo

Dr. M.K Hassan, a Washington D.C. United States-based Nigerian, writes a rejoinder and queries the professorial claim of Mr. Wale Oladipo, Secretary of Peoples Democratic Party, over his jibe at General Muhammadu Buhari as ‘Semi-Illiterate’
I was shocked to read a press statement from Wadata Plaza issued by a so called Professor Wale Oladipo, secretary of the PDP, saying that General Muhammadu Buhari is a semi illiterate jackboot. It is no wonder that our education system has fallen so low, else how can one explain a professor making such a statement? How did Wale Oladipo become a professor to start with? It is quite astonishing that he can say this. The professor doesn’t seem to understand the basic rudiments of learning and what it means for one to be literate or not.
Buhari attended the best military schools in the world. In case the professor doesn’t know, Buhari graduated as a military officer (Lieutenant) in Royal Military Academy, Aldeshot UK. He attended the Defense College India.  Col Buhari attended the US Army War College Carlisle in Pennsylvania from 1979 -1980 and earned his command as a Brigadier General. The respected General Collin Powel attended the same school in 1976 to become Brigadier General. Some of Buhari’s classmates include General Beltson, General Thomas P Carney, General Bill Matz, General David E.K. Cooper etc. all of them are alive and can be reached and they will give glowing tributes of the man, Buhari, they know as their classmate.Anyone interested in verifying Buhari’s academic credentials can write the school instead of reading jargon from a deranged Wadata Plaza Professor of Politics of Destruction Party (PDP). I have checked Google Scholar hoping that Prof. Wale Oladipo’s name and publications will show up and nothing is showing up, that says a lot about him as a Professor than Buhari as a retired decorated General who served his country so well and has not claimed any scholarship.

GMB as a young dashing Head of State in the 1980s
The curriculum at the U.S. Army War College earns one a Masters Degree in Strategic Studies and that is what Buhari has. For somebody to claim that a graduate of such a prestigious school is semi-illiterate, means something is very wrong with that person’s brain. By all academic and military standards, Buhari’s   education is superb and the best any general can get in the world. Therefore, for Wale Oladipo to claim Buhari is semi-illiterate speaks volumes about his understanding of what education is even all about. The unlearned professor thinks education is about earning paper degrees only, and even if it was the case, Buhari has them from the most respected military institutions in the world.

General Muhammadu Buhari has the kind of military strategic education and experience to deal a decisive blow on Boko Haram and end the insecurity challenges facing Nigeria. Buhari is the only army officer with the opportunity to command 3 out of 4 Nigeria’s army divisions as a GOC.

In 1983, when rebels from Chad took over our land, seizing more than 19 villages (much like what the Boko Haram is doing now), Major General Buhari led a successful operation as the GOC to push back the Chadian rebels and reclaim our territory.

In 1984, when the Maitatsine sect decided to declare war on Nigeria like what Boko Haram is doing now, Head of State, Muhammadu Buhari wasted no time in crushing them. Boko Haram is a descendant of the Maitatsine sect with the same extremist ideology and anti-western education philosophy. It is surely President Buhari that will be able to handle them: eliminating these terrorists when he comes to power like he did before. Muhammadu Buhari as a captain fought in the Congo Civil War and won the Congo Medal. He was there during our civil war to bring peace and keep Nigeria one. That is true patriot: a man that gave his life to another country not only his fatherland.

Since the goons in Wadata Plaza have started the literacy debate, it is very appropriate to ask them that they produce Dr. Goodluck Jonathan’s Ph.D thesis and publications in renowned journals. Goodluck’s speeches, attitude, and interviews with international media don’t portray him as a Ph.D holder. His past interview with Christiane Amanpour was quite embarrassing; he couldn’t even make eye contact with her. Nigerians are eager to read his thesis and publications.

In conclusion, it is obvious to all Nigerians that the PDP government and its illiterate professor are only interested in playing dirty politics with the lives and properties of Nigerians. Nigerians now need Buhari, a man with international military education and experience, a seasoned administrator with zero tolerance for corruption to end this insecurity, bring prosperity, and place Nigeria at the seat it deserves in the comity of nations.

Alicia Keys Gets Adorable Baby Shower From Hubby, Swizz Beatz

Alicia Keys poses with Swizz Beatz and her father-in-law (Instagram)
With Alicia Keys's New Year's Eve due date fast approaching, the Grammy-winning singer celebrated her impending arrival with a little help from her family. Alicia's husband Swizz Beatz real name Kasseem Dean threw a gorgeous baby shower for the soon-to-be mother of two over the weekend. "Baby Vibes" the 36-year-old producer captioned the above photo on Instagram. In the snapshot, a beaming Keys, 33, looks gorgeous in a comfortable red dress adorned with a ribbon (we're guessing thatt it reads "world's best mom") standing next to her husband. Swizz's father was also on hand to help out with the festivities.

Swizz and Alicia's 3-year-old son Egypt was also on hand for the festivities and even donned a dapper little suit for the occasion. He posed with his mom underneath a pink-and-blue welcome sign that read, "Welcome to Alicia's and Kasseem's Baby Shower." (The couple has yet to reveal their baby's gender, hence the dual coloring.)  In another photo Swizz shared, he can be seen enjoying a toast with his wife. "#blessings #almostready," the musician captioned the below pic. While Alicia was no doubt sipping on a non-alcoholic beverage, the rest of her guests enjoyed champagne.

Keys recently gushed about how excited Egypt is to become a big brother. "He comes up and kisses the belly all the time, and he's always asking, ‘Mommy, can the baby be in the bed with me?' I'm like, ‘well not at the beginning,'" she recalled last month on Live! With Kelly and Michael. Apparently Egypt is holding out hope for a little brother.
By the looks of things, he should know pretty soon!

“The Death of Conscience in Nigeria” – By Prof. Pat Utomi

Here’s a piece of article that was published on Professor Pat Utomi’s Facebook wall and we thought to share.

Uto,i

“The truth of the challenge of saving the dying conscience in Nigeria, it seems to me, has to begin with enlightenment on our shared humanity. The death of anyone should, as the great quote goes, diminish us. The death of so many should crush our spirits and inspire action. The abduction of so many innocents unto so uncertain a fate should force us all to lose sleep“.

It used to be said that a conscience can become seared. As I watched a country carry on after more than 200 young women were abducted by anarchists who use terror as their signature tune and the powerful carried on as if nothing was troubling, and most of us as if it were a distant irritation, I felt rage in my spirit and a sense that in Nigeria, man’s humanity had been crushed and conscience had passed from being seared to suffering death.

To reflect on the death of conscience is a grave thing. As conscience is the inbuilt compass that enables the human navigate between good and evil, if it dies, I wonder if we can truly call who is left, human. Yet, as you look around, you see conscience in a frightening state. How can so many young people face a fate worse than terror attack and the institutions of state function as if nothing happened?

Much has already been said about the President celebrating and dancing in Kano and Ibadan the day after the first Nyanya bombing left nearly a hundred citizens dead and so many more severely injured. Many have compared Aso Rock’s response to that bombing with the response of The White House to the Boston Marathon bombing in which three lives were lost. Those comparisons lead me to recall a similar incident I commented about several years earlier.

In the same week that a cable car accident in Austria resulted in three deaths, a tanker truck crashed into a traffic jam created by a roadblock near Ibadan caused more than 200 deaths. Austria went into national mourning, flags flew at half mast, broadcasts appealed to the national spirit.

In Nigeria, the President, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo, did not even bother to ask the media officer in the Villa to issue a statement. I asked at the time what a Nigerian life was worth. But we know that the Federal Executive Council can suspend sitting if a sibling of the Vice-President dies. Is it a matter of relativising the worth of people?

My friends who teach ethics will tell you that once you relativise the worth of another, you have made your own worth relative. This is precisely why people in power are worshipped and the day after, they are out of power, are treated like dirt by those people who the day before said they were the greatest thing since sliced bread.

The truth of the challenge of saving the dying conscience in Nigeria, it seems to me, has to begin with enlightenment on our shared humanity. The death of anyone should, as the great quote goes, diminish us. The death of so many should crush our spirits and inspire action. The abduction of so many innocents unto so uncertain a fate should force us all to lose sleep. Instead of leaders closing ranks in advance of the common good, everything is reduced to partisanship and some are even questioning that the abduction took place as some people question that the holocaust took place. This cannot be our way.

Again, it is important for those who think it is something happening to one remote part of the North-East to be reminded of Rev. Martin Niemoller and Dante’s inferno. Niemoller reminds that they first came for the Jews, and the object kept quiet. Because those Jews were troublesome anyway. Next, they came for communists but he stayed mute because he was not a Communist, then they came for the Catholics but he kept quiet because he was a protestant. When they came for him, there was no one left to speak up.
To this I would like to remind that in Dante’s inferno, the hottest part of hell is reserved for those who in a moral question take refuge in neutrality.

We cannot go on with consciences that leave much to question. We saw a country cheer on as power raped the banking system, stealing people’s property and ordinary Nigerian shareholders lost their life’s savings and investments but we failed to speak up. Those that tried to point to truth were shouted down. Now, the wound is open. When I called for international consultants to be used to evaluate the Central Bank of Nigeria’s decisions on bank takeover, some said sour grapes. Now, let us go to the Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria and see what documents they can find in the CBN after the gang rape of an economy we cheered. If the conscience can be shut out in one area, it can be everywhere.

Beyond the CBN, this syndrome of impunity, no matter how much it makes others suffer, has become widespread in Nigeria and the daily killing and maiming of innocent people have simply become part of this recession of conscience evident in corruption whose consequence is the slow death of many but which is now systemic and some see as an entitlement. The seared conscience prevents us from seeing the real consequence of the bribes we demand.

The nature of this dying conscience comes alive in what has happened to the missing Chibok girls’ story which we have to close with. Imagine for a second that one of those girls were your daughter or sister. Think what you will be feeling and thinking now. Think also of how if we fail to nip one social problem in the bud it quickly becomes a norm. Remember how kidnapping started in the Niger Delta.

Today, the South-East is sliding back because its sons and daughters are afraid to visit. So, Boko Haram is not a North-East problem. It can be the death of all of us. Until we act together from an awakening of conscience, we may be sub-optimising big time in thinking we are being self-centred. In front of us is an intersection. We can either walk the road to Somalia or pour cold water on our snoring consciences.

THE BEST 5 NOLLYWOOD ACTORS OF 2014 BY CHARLES NOVIA

Just last week, Nollywood topshot, Charles Novia, released his best five Nollywood actresses of 2014 via his blog charlesnoviadaily. He has released the list for his best five male actors in 2014. Novia stated that criteria for judging the actors in 2014 weren’t any different.  As usual, charlesnoviadaily.com sampled opinions of tested and trusted film professionals and critics who put heads together with him to scrutinize the art of many shortlisted names after which he arrived at the five names based on his overall veto.  He noted that there were no dissenting opinions amongst his team of experts about the Number One choice.
Novia added that for the crowd which believes that an actor's popularity and fan base automatically means that such an actor must be on lists such as this, he said to them: “get your heads out of your closets. On this platform, all levels of professionalism are used as universal templates. I do not give a damn about the number of years an actor or actress has spent in the industry when I draw up such lists. I am more concerned with areas of the actors’ body of work for the year and how impressive such was when placed under an artistic microscope. Using criteria such as interpretation, characterization, internalization, enunciation, and actor’s visualization among others, the following actors are my top 5 for 2014.”
NUMBER FIVE: AYO MAKUN (AY)

ay-makun

Sometimes we have an impression that stand-up comedians are just a stereotypical bunch and do not really act outside the ambits of their profession. But it takes a lot of self-training coupled with an inherent acting talent for a stand-up comedian to mimic different characters on stage whilst on his routine. Transiting to the Big Screen and exploring all the elements of acting in such a move calls for some balls on the part of such a stand-up act. And AY proves that he has balls. In the movie, '30 Days in Atlanta', one was impressed with AY and his acting prowess. Bringing to life  and to the screen, a social media legendary character known as Akpos, one could see that AY went all out with the character. His jokes were on point. His deliberately obtuse responses to obvious situations were good and most of all, he maintained a verve and onscreen energy which was demanded from the character all through the flick. That energy though might have been overdone in areas where he played to the gallery but such were quickly overshadowed by the brilliantly-plotted script in which Akpos shows us how a 'Waffi' neophyte epitomizes the average Nigerian who travels for the first time out of his country. In '30 Days in Atlanta', AY didn't have to act funny. He was funny. Having seen him act in the tepid 'AY's Crib', his sitcom on television where all he seems to do is to deliberately or curiously bulge his eyes when rendering his lines, I was wary of what to expect in his movie. But he was well-researched for the role and had a great supporting cast which helped his delivery. AY deserves the accolades he has been getting over that movie. Most of all, he deserves to be on my list this year.

NUMBER FOUR: TOPE TEDELA

TOPE TEDELA

'A Mile From Home' is Tope's breakout movie. Having won a few laurels on account of the movie for 'Best Actor', I was curious to watch the movie earlier on in the year and when I did, I was not disappointed by his characterization in the movie. He played a character  which requires the utmost physical interpretation for the role as well as layers of emotional demands and intrinsic internalization. Where the dictates of the character needed him to deliver, Tope Tedela did. However, a trained eye could see that the young man still has a lot of work to do in some areas of his acting skills which a short course in an acting school would enhance if he so desires but that trained eye would also recognize that there's a zeal within his talent which can be nurtured for the future. It is heartwarming to see the new generation of actors coming all out to prove that talent is king, beyond good looks. For Tope Tedela, his talent may well take him places.

 NUMBER THREE: LUCKY EJIM
LUCKY EJIM 2
Ejim

Lucky Ejim's name might not ring much of a bell to many but his art clanged more than a Church Bell for me in 2014. The movie 'Render to Ceaser' in which Lucky plays a psychotic villain had a run at the cinemas earlier in 2014 and Lucky stood out for me as the man of the movie. He was superb in his characterization and his articulation was brilliant too. Now, there is a difference between playing a villain and making the viewers accept that an actor is one. In this movie, Lucky blurred the lines and all through the movie, he was as good as they come in acting. After his commendable outing in the 2009 movie, 'The Tenant', we had to wait for years for the Canada-based actor to return to the Big Screen over here. And he didn't fail.

NUMBER TWO: MIKE OMOREGBE
mike_omoregbe1
Omoregbe

His name on this list would shock a lot of people who may not even know who he is. But he is an ACTOR and his artistry deserves my commendation. If anyone has watched 'INVASION 1897' by Lancelot Imasuen, you would agree with me that Mike Omoregbe, who played the role of 'Oba Ovoramwen' was as brilliantly regal in the role as he was visually a sizzle in his interpretation. His carriage and internalization for that role was quite an aesthetic delight and he did stir a lot of African cultural enthusiasts with his various levels of interpretation for that role. For a first timer on the big screen, I must doff my heart to this new entrant on the block. Actors such as this should not escape Nollywood's radar in the present future.

NUMBER ONE: SADIQ DABA

SADIQ DABA
Sadiq Daba

Sadiq Daba is my number one actor in Nollywood this year. If his ascension to this list in the first place would shock anyone, I would gleefully go the extra mile to add an electrocution value to that shock. The Veteran Actor has perhaps given us his role of a lifetime and one which we will never forget in years to come. I do not wish to believe that Uncle Sadiq's role in ' October 1' could very well be a magnum opus to the industry, having being called out of a self-imposed retirement by Kunle Afolayan. It shouldn't be. As the Colonial Inspector in 'October 1', Mr Daba shows us all why tried  and tested actors of his professional ilk are still the unbeatable best. One could appreciate that he personally put in a lot of research and hard work into his character and limited himself professionally to acceptable areas of believable acting, eschewing melodramatic dictates which other actors cast in that role might have been tempted to accede to. His acting reached a powerful crescendo when in the last scene, he confronted the White Colonial officers. That was an awesome interpretation. In this age of harried and hurried actors who believe that they know it all, they can learn lots from actors like Sadiq Daba.
He gets my ultimate diadem for 2014. Congratulations, Sir.
